Last night’s Box Score
Duluth, MN – July 9, 2009. With last night’s 3-2 victory over the Duluth Huskies the Madison Mallards remain alone in first place to begin the Northwoods League second half of the season heading into Thursday’s series ending game at Wade Stadium.
Starting pitcher J.R. Graham (Santa Clara) picked up his first win (1-2) of the year in his first start after throwing six shutout innings while only allowing one base knock to leadoff hitter Scott Sommerfeld (Parkway South HS) in the first inning. After Brad Allen (Elgin CC) relieved Graham in the seventh and allowed a run, Dan Burawa (St. John’s) was called upon to get the final six outs and did just that in striking out four batters to receive his second save of the season.
The Mallards’ offense was paced by two RBI by left fielder Jerrud Sabourin (Indiana) and a sixth inning RBI double by Adam McClain (Memphis).
Tonight, right-hander Derek Self (Louisville) will make his second start of the year. He is 1-1 with a 5.02 ERA through 14.1 innings. In his first start on June 18 against the Wisconsin Woodchucks he received the victory after throwing six scoreless innings while allowing three hits.
Meanwhile Duluth’s Drew Smyly (Arkansas) will make his second start of the year. In his first start he threw only three innings and allowed one hit.
Home Run Champion crowned tonight?
First baseman Harold Riggins (NC State) is currently tied with former Mallard Francois Larmore (Marshall) for the franchise single-season home run record with 7 long balls and will look to break the mark again tonight.
