Last night’s Box Score

Madison, WI – July 12, 2009. As the great Ernie Banks would say, “Let’s play two.” Madison and Battle Creek will squeeze its two-game set into one day, playing a day/night doubleheader on Sunday and making for an off-day on Monday. The two teams already split a series at the “Duck Pond” earlier in the week and Mallards will need to do at least that today to maintain their two-game lead on the Bombers in the South Division.

Madison (25-17 overall, 6-2 second half) overcame Friday night’s debacle and powered its way to a 7-4 win over Alexandria on Saturday night. There were as much fireworks during the game as those that took place afterwards. Harold Riggins (NC State) broke the single-season franchise record for home runs with his eighth blast of the season, a no-doubt grand slam over the left center field fence to give the Mallards a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Matt Jansen (Purdue) allowed four runs (3 earned) on four hits over 7.2 innings to earn his fifth win of the year. Cameron Amsrude (UW-Milwaukee) pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings to grab his first save with the Mallards. Troy Channing (St. Mary’s) provided the final blow with a pinch-hit solo shot over the wall in center for his sixth homer of the season.

Both games today will be nine innings apiece and there will be two gates, meaning separate tickets will need to be purchased for each game. First pitch of game one is set for 1:05 p.m. while game two is slated for 6:05 p.m.

Game one will feature Mallard right-hander Jordan Hershiser (USC) who sports a 1-1 record with a 4.85 ERA this year. He’ll take on Battle Creek’s Josh McElwee (Newberry) who has a 2-3 record with a 4.37 ERA. In game two, Jacob Esch (Georgia Tech) will get the ball. The righty has a 1-1 record with a 2.33 ERA this season. The Bombers will send Matt Talley (The Citadel) to the hill with a 4-2 mark and a 1.74 ERA. He earned the win on Monday in a strong start against the Mallards.
