Last night’s Box Score

Madison, WI – July 16, 2009. The Mallards earned a pivotal sweep over South Division rival La Crosse on Wednesday night with a 9-7 win. They did so in come-from-behind fashion with four runs in the ninth to erase a one run deficit and will now begin a 4-game homestand starting with a two-game set against Green Bay on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.

Down 6-5 after eight innings, Madison scored four big runs in the ninth off of Logger closer Greg Holt (North Carolina) to retake the lead. It was only the second loss in 25 tries when leading after eight innings for La Crosse and the first win for the Mallards when trailing after eight innings in 17 tries.

Kurtis Muller (Iowa) went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in during the game, including a sacrifice fly in the ninth to tie things up at 6-6. Jerrud Sabourin (Indiana) gave them the lead with a two-run single to score Troy Channing (St. Mary’s) and Chris Barker (MATC). Joe Patterson (Texas A&M) provided the final tally with an RBI single, the Mallards’ fifth hit in the frame.

Mallards starting pitcher J.R. Graham (Santa Clara) received the no-decision after allowing a season-high eight walks and four runs on four hits over 5.1 innings. Brad Allen (Elgin CC) earned his first win in relief and Dan Burawa (St. John’s) earned his fourth save of the season despite a solo home run to lead off the ninth.

The Bullfrogs will enter the “Duck Pond” on Thursday night and will face right-hander Derek Self (Louisville). Self is coming off a win in his last start back on July 9 when he allowed one unearned run and scattered just five hits over eight innings. On the year, he’s 2-1 with a 3.22 ERA. Self will go up against Zach Varce (Portland) who’s 1-4 record fails to reflect his slim 1.75 ERA.
