Last night’s Box Score
Madison, WI – July 19, 2009. On the eve before the Northwoods League All-Star break, the Mallards will seek momentum heading into the final push at a South Division second half crown. They defeated Eau Claire, 7-4, in the first of two games on Friday night and will go for the series sweep at home when they host the Express at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday.

Matt Jansen (Purdue) went 6.2 innings and allowed just two runs, but none of them earned. He pitched his way out of trouble on a couple occasions and captured his league-leading sixth win of the season, moving to 6-1 on the year. Jerrud Sabourin (Indiana) went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs, including a two-run double in the fifth to lead the offense.

Madison (28-21 overall, 9-6 second half) scored four runs in the fifth and three more in the seventh and staved off a late rally by the Express (26-20, 5-11) in the ninth to remain one game behind South Division leader La Crosse, who also won on Saturday.

Madison’s Jacob Esch (Georgia Tech) enters today with a 1-1 record and a 2.25 ERA while Eau Claire’s Louis Head (Texas Tech) comes in with a 2-2 mark and a 4.24 ERA. Esch pitched well in his last start against Battle Creek last Sunday, for the most part. He allowed just a run on five hits despite walking six batters over five innings.

Sunday will be a very special promotion day. The Mallards will host Susan G. Komen for the Cure Madison Affiliate Night at the “Duck Pond”. The Mallards will wear pink uniforms and use pink bats that will both be sold in a silent auction benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure Madison Affiliate.
