Last night’s Box Score
Madison, WI – July 24, 2009. The Mallards were stifled by Wisconsin starter Bryce Butt (Ohio) on Thursday night as he went the distance in a complete game 4-hit shutout. Madison will look to right-hander Alex Rivers (Santa Clara) for a series split and a trip back into the win column.
Madison (29-22 overall, 10-7 second half) struggled in their first game following the All-Star break. They committed four defensive errors and although they hit made solid contact all night, the Mallards couldn’t get more than one base runner in any inning, to the credit of the left-hander, Butt.
Mallard righty Cody Winiarski (MATC) fell to 5-3 on the year after seven strong innings. His only bad inning was the fifth when he allowed four runs to the Woodchucks, three of which were earned and could also have been prevented as a result of sloppy defense and a questionable safe call during a rundown.
There were 11 combined hits in the contest, surprisingly all of them coming from 11 different players. The Mallards are really looking for a spark at home as they’ve dropped seven of their last 10 games at the “Duck Pond”.
Maybe Rivers can provide that spark as he takes the mound against fellow right-hander, Bryce Shafer (Valparaiso). Rivers enters Friday with a humble 1-2 record despite a slim 2.73 ERA. Shafer counters with a 3-1 mark and a 2.55 ERA.
Tonight will feature “Big Lebowski Night” sponsored by Dream Lanes with special guest Jeff Dowd who inspired the character “The Dude” in the cult movie. Bowling and commentary by Dowd at Dream Lanes will begin at 10:30 p.m. The band the “New Kites” will also perform.
