Madison, WI – July 24, 2009. Friday night’s contest between the Madison Mallards and Wisconsin Woodchucks was cancelled due to inclement weather after lightning in the area prevented play from continuing at the “Duck Pond” with the Mallards leading 2-0 in the second inning.
Both teams endured a 39-minute rain/lightning delay after six pitches from Alex Rivers (Santa Clara) in the top of the first. When play resumed, Kurtis Muller (Iowa) led off the bottom of the first inning with a single to right and he and Jerrud Sabourin (Indiana) each came around to score on Joe Patterson’s (Texas A&M) bases loaded two-run double to left, giving the Mallards an early lead.
A half-inning later, yet another delay ensued spanning over 90 minutes with one out in the top of the second inning. Both teams began warming up to give it another go before both umpires spotted more lightning in the area and called the game for good.
All statistics scored during the game will not count and the game will not be made up due to it being the last meeting between both teams and the result of not having a common off day for the remainder of the regular season.
*Those seated in either the Box or Bleacher seats during Friday’s game can exchange their ticket stubs for another Box or Bleacher seat good for any of the six remaining Mallards home games. Those seated in a suite or the Great Dane Duck Blind can also exchange ticket stubs for either Box or Bleacher seats. Tickets must be redeemed in-person at the Mallards ticket office located at Warner Park. Please call the ticket office at 608.246.4277 for more information.
