Madison, WI – March 9, 2010. This week’s Mallards Alumni update features three hitters on torrid streaks at their respective colleges as well as a Northwoods League All-Star pitcher from last year’s squad. Spring baseball started in February for some schools and is beginning to heat up in the midst of March. Recent accomplishments of Mallards Alumni are listed below.
Joe Patterson (’09) Texas A&M. The senior Aggie has started 11 games this spring, hitting for an amazing 20 hits in 40 at bats (.500 avg.). His 10 runs and 7 RBIs have helped propel Texas A&M to a fast 9-2 start. A career-long 15 game hitting streak came to a halt last Sunday, March 7th when he was robbed of a hit on a tremendous diving catch. Patterson posted solid numbers in his 53 games for the Mallards last summer, hitting at a .277 clip and contributing 5 home runs and 29 RBIs.
Kurtis Muller (’09) Iowa. The Sun Prairie, WI native extended a hitting streak of his own to twenty games dating back to last season in a game on Sunday against Kansas. In eight games, the junior has reached base at an astounding .512% and stolen four bags in six attempts. Muller continues to find a way to get on base as he led the Mallards in OBP last summer. His OBP of .409% in 2009 was good for third in all of the Northwoods League.
Cody Winiarski (’09) Virginia. A former MATC baseball player who hails from Franksville, WI has struggled in his first three starts of the season. The right hander has a 1-0 record and an ERA of 6.43 in 14 innings for the Virginia Cavaliers. The Junior looks to improve on his next start after an amazing year with the Mallards last summer where he was named to the 2009 Northwoods League All-Star Team. Winiarski went 6-5 with a 2.14 ERA in 80 innings of work.
Jerrud Sabourin (’09) Indiana. The junior Hoosier is hitting at a batting average of .455 through 10 games. In his last game he showed his versatility by notching two hits and pitching three innings of shut-out baseball. In 60 appearances as a Mallard, Sabourin hit for a .294 average and batted in 28 runs.
