Madison, WI – June 10, 2012. The Madison Mallards (5-6) will try to avoid the sweep against the Eau Claire Express (5-6) in the second game of a two game series. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 pm.
On Saturday the Express combined great starting pitching from starter Matt Trowbridge (Central Michigan) and a combined five runs in the third and fourth to steal the series opener 6-3. Trowbridge (2-0) went 6.0 shutout innings while allowing two hits.
The Mallards continued their recent trend of relying on the long ball to generate offense. For the third straight game the Mallards scored their only runs off of a single home run, this time coming off the bat of right fielder Tyler Marincov (North Florida).
Mallards second baseman Luis Munoz (Coffeyville CC) has been impressive with the glove, his 27 assists in nine games leads the team. Offensively Munoz has been a sparkplug for the team, hitting in the two spot in the lineup at times this season. His .250 batting average is second on the team.
Anthony Marzi (Connecticut) will get the start for the Mallards on the hill. His last start Marzi struck out seven and allowed two runs in 4.0 innings in the Mallards 4-3 loss to the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (5-6).
Taking the ball for the Express is right-hander Philip Walby (San Diego State). In Walbys (1-0) first start of the season he pitched 7.0 innings of shutout baseball and struck out four in helping the Express win 2-1 over the Lakeshore Chinooks (7-4).
Infielder Josh Schefert (Nebraska) had two RBIs in the Express win over the Mallards on Saturday, his first since a June 2nd in 9-6 loss to the Rafters. His eight RBIs lead the team and will be looking to add on to that total in the series finale.
After wrapping up their two game series against the Express, the Mallards head to Wausau for the first time this season to take on the Wisconsin Woodchucks (6-5) for another two game series.
The Mallards returns to the “Duck Pond” on Wednesday June 13th to take on the Bombers That night will be The Payroll Company Police Appreciation Night at the Ballpark featuring Erik Estrada from the hit TV show ChiPs.
