Madison, WI – June 12, 2012. The 2012 Major League First-Year Player Draft finished up last week and the Madison Mallards led the Northwoods League with 17 current and former players selected. A total of 129 current Northwoods League players and alumni were selected in this year’s draft.
The Mallards highest pick came in the seventh round, when third baseman Stephen Bruno (Virginia) was taken 224th overall. Bruno played for the Mallards in 2010 when he recorded 16 RBIs in 24 games.
Right-handed pitcher Matt Milroy (Illinois) was taken shortly after when he was selected in the eleventh round, 347th overall by the Miami Marlins. Milroy played the 2011 season with the Mallards and had a 4.13 ERA in 22 appearances out of the bullpen. He led the team with seven saves and also struck out 44 batters in just 28.1 innings.
Right-handed pitcher Alec Mills (Tennessee – Martin) was drafted in the 22nd round by the Kansas City Royals and has signed with the team. In just 13 innings pitched for the Mallards in 2012, Mills had struck out 17 and allowed just two runs.

The Mallards return to the “Duck Pond” on Wednesday, June 13th to take on the Battle Creek Bombers. That night will be The Payroll Company Police Appreciation Night at the Ballpark featuring Erik Estrada from the hit TV show ChiPs.
