Madison, WI – June 16, 2012. The Madison Mallards (7-10) welcome the newest member of the Northwoods League, the Lakeshore Chinooks (9-8), to the “Duck Pond” tonight for the first of a two game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm.
On Friday the Mallards dropped the series to the Battle Creek Bombers (9-8) after losing a wild 15-14 slug fest. With the Bombers ahead 15-5 through 5 ½ innings the Mallards would go on to score the next nine runs, but would come up short when shortstop Tom Verdi (Connecticut) grounded out to Bombers shortstop Dylan Delaney (Michigan) to end the game.
The Mallards combined to hit four home runs, their first multi-home run game of the season. Right fielder Tyler Marincov (North Florida), left fielder Vince Bruno (California), and catcher Jose Trevino (Oral Roberts) all homered to help the Mallards produce their largest run total of the season. After going 4-5 with two home runs and five RBIs Trevino was named the Northwoods League Player of the Night, the first time this season a Mallard has received the honor.
Left-hander Anthony Marzi (Connecticut) will get the start tonight for the Mallards. Marzi (1-0) has made two starts, posting a 3.00 ERA and 12 strikeouts through 9.0 innings. His last time out he got the win in a 4-3 road victory over the Eau Claire Express (6-11), going 5.0 innings and striking out five.
The Chinooks come into the series after dropping four out of five games on their five game home stand, losing series to both the La Crosse Loggers (12-5) and Green Bay Bullfrogs (9-8).
After homering in back to back games Marincov has moved himself into a tie for the Northwoods League lead with four on the season. The right-handed power hitter is currently tied with La Crosse’s Juliene Jones (Sacramento CC) and Wisconsin Rapids’ Alex Bacon (North Florida).
The Mallards will wrap up their longest home stand of the season against the Chinooks on Sunday June 17th at 3:05 pm. That day will Stoddard’s Country Grove Market Father’s Day Celebration, the first 500 dads will receive grill gloves courtesy of Stoddard’s.
