Madison, WI – July 20, 2012.  The Madison Mallards are excited to announce the participants in this year’s Northwoods League Home Run Derby presented by the Dane County Regional Airport.  The Home Run Derby, on July 24th at 6:00 pm will preclude the Northwoods League All-Star Game presented by Zimbrick Honda at 7:35 pm.  Eight contestants, four from the North Division and four from the South Division, were selected to represent their respective divisions in the contest.

For the North Division the players chosen were Rochester’s Trevor Podratz (Hawaii), Mankato’s John Michael Twichell (Texas), Waterloo’s Kevin Kaczmarski (Evansville), and Duluth’s Michael Suiter (Kansas).  Representing the South Division will be Madison’s own Tyler Marincov (North Florida), Wisconsin Rapids’ Alex Bacon (North Florida), Eau Claire’s Casey Gillaspie (Wichita State), and La Crosse’s Richard Prigatano (Long Beach State).

The 2012 NWL Home Run Derby presented by the Dane County Regional Airport will consist of eight contestants facing off over three rounds.  Round one will consist of each player getting an eight out at-bat with the top four advancing to the second round.  In round two, each player will get an eight out at-bat.  Home runs from the first round carry over to the second round, the players with the most home runs after two rounds will advance to the finals.  In the final round, each player will get an eight out at-bat, and the winner will be the player who hits the most home runs in the final round.  An out is defined as any time a player swings at a pitch and does not hit a home run.

Last season, Mankato’s Shaun Cooper amazed the crowd at Witter Field in Wisconsin Rapids by winning the NWL Home Run Derby and blasting 33 home runs over three rounds.  

The Mallards will host the Northwoods League All-Star Game on July 24th.  The best players in the League will participate in the All-Star Game and showcase their talent in front of more than 60 MLB scouts.  To purchase your tickets to the NWL All-Star Game call the Mallards ticket office at 608-246-4277 or check out www.mallardsbaseball.com.

The Madison Mallards are part of the 16-team Northwoods League.  The Northwoods League has more teams, plays more games, and has more fans than any other Summer Collegiate League in North America.
