 Box Score

Mequon, WI – August 7, 2012 With a five run eighth inning and four RBI’s from left fielder Derek Fisher (Virginia), the Madison Mallards (19-10, 35-29) knocked off the Lakeshore Chinooks (15-14, 32-32) 7-4. The victory gives the Mallards a 2-1 lead in the five game series.

Through two and a half innings, the game was scoreless until Chinooks second baseman Luke Maldonado (MATC-Madison) collected his first hit of the year and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Maldonado reached third following two putouts and scored when shortstop German Reyes (Winston-Salem) nailed an RBI single into deep right for the 1-0 lead.

After playing mistake free baseball, the Chinooks stumbled in the sixth. Mallards right fielder Tyler Marincov (N. Florida) hit the ball to shortstop, but Reyes threw it off target to first, allowing Marincov to reach base. The Mallards capitalized on the error when Fisher registered an RBI double to tie the game at one apiece. Shortstop Mike Reuvekamp (California) batted in Fisher for a 2-1 lead as the throw from Chinooks centerfielder Charlie Markson (Notre Dame) to catcher Connor Lynch (GA Tech) was not in time.

In the eighth inning, the Chinooks completely collapsed as the Mallards went on an offensive explosion. First baseman Jeff Zimmerman (N. Illinois) belted his 12th home run and with the bases loaded, Tom Sawyer (Ripon) scored Reuvekamp on a RBI fielders choice for the 4-1 lead. The nail in the coffin came when Fisher nailed a three RBI triple for the commanding 7-1 lead.

Despite the deficit, the Chinooks made a comeback in the ninth. With two outs, Chinooks second baseman Sergio Sanchez hit a double and Maldanado reached first on a walk. Then, Markson loaded the bases with a single of his own and right fielder Forrest Chadwick (Southern Maine) launched a three-RBI double to make it a 7-4 contest. However, the Chinooks were unable to pull the comeback off as Reyes flew out.

Mallards starter Bobby Poyner (Florida) earned his fourth win as he pitched 6.0 innings and struck out five, allowing just one run. Through six starts, Poyner still hasn’t given up more than one two runs.

Ryan Harris (Florida) (1-2) got the loss after he pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs even though he struck out eight Mallards.
