Madison, WI – June 11, 2013.  16 former Madison Mallards players were drafted over the weekend in the 2013 MLB Draft.  Jonathon Crawford (Florida) become the highest player drafted in Mallards history when he was selected 20th overall by the Detroit Tigers.  

Crawford, a 6’1″, 205-pound right hander from Okeechobee, Florida played for the Mallards in 2011 following his freshman season with the Gators.  He went 2-2 with a 5.21 ERA for the Mallards in 38 innings pitched while starting eight games and appearing in 13.  He proved to be electric by striking out 51 batters.  He had great success in all three of his seasons with the Gators.

Tom Windle (Minnesota) was chosen with the 56th overall selection in the second round by the LA Dodgers.  Windle, a 6’3,” 200-pound native of Maple Grove, Minnesota, went 2-4 with a 4.29 ERA in 14 appearances—seven starts—for the Mallards during the 2011 season. He struck out 60 and walked 20 in his 52.2 innings of work. That summer, Windle also played on the USA Collegiate National Team and went 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two appearances. 

Daniel Gibson (Florida) was taken with the 210th pick in the seventh round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Gibson, a left-handed pitcher, played for the Mallards in 2012 and was 4-3 with a 2.27 ERA in nine appearances, including seven starts.  Gibson’s teammate in 2012, Tyler Marincov (North Florida) was the next Mallard selected with the 251st pick in the eighth round by the Oakland A’s.  Marincov, an outfielder broke the Mallards single season home run record when he belted 13 last season. He was the Mallards lone post-season All-Star in 2012.

Justin Parr (Illinois), played for the Mallards in 2010 and 2011 and was drafted with the 241st pick in the eighth round by the Philadelphia Phillies.  Parr hit .296 with three home runs and 25 RBIs in 2011 while playing 57 games and hit .256 with four RBIs in 13 games at the end of the 2010 season.  He was recently named the Big Ten Player of the Year for 2013.

Jeff Zimmerman (Northern Illinois) shattered the Mallards record books in 2012 when he hit 13 home runs and had 57 RBIs.  Zimmerman was selected in the 19th round, 567th overall by the Seattle Mariners.

The Northwoods League had a total of 149 players drafted in 2013 including three in the first round and two in the second.

The Mallards conclude their current four-game road trip with another game against the Chinooks Tuesday at 6:35 pm. They return home Wednesday for a 7:05 pm game against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. The BOCA Burger Vegetarian Appreciation Night and the Madison Knitters Guild Stitch and Pitch Night will both be held that night. The Meriter Hand Sanitizer Giveaway will also take place.

The Madison Mallards are part of the 16-team Northwoods League. The Northwoods League has more teams, plays more games, and draws more fans than any other Summer Collegiate Baseball League in North America. In 2013, the Northwoods League will celebrate its 20th season.
