Madison, WI — June 15, 2013. The Madison Mallards (9-6) return to the “Duck Pond” tonight for a 6:05 pm game against the Green Bay Bullfrogs (7-10) one night after exploding for 14 runs on 14 hits.
In the Mallards 14-4 victory last night, they scored a run in every inning besides the first and eighth and eight different hitters recorded an RBI.
Drew Weeks (North Florida) led the way offensively for the Mallards by grabbing three extra-base hits and knocking in seven runs. He was named the Northwoods League Player of the Night after the performance. He broke things open in the sixth with a bases-clearing triple that put the Mallards up 8-1. He was also the lone Mallard with multiple RBIs on the night.
Mallards reliever Danny Sullivan (Davenport) picked up the win and improves to 1-0 on the year. He relieved starter Cam Verbeke (Illinois State) in the fifth and pitched two innings of hitless ball and struck out four.
Jamie Nunn (Appalachian State) will be making his third start of the season and will look to keep his ERA at 0.00. He is 1-0 on the year and received the win in his last start on June 8th against Eau Claire by allowing one run—unearned—on four hits in five innings. He struck out five. His other start came on June 1st against La Crosse, when he allowed no runs on two hits and went six innings.
Nunn will be squaring off against Bryce Bellin (Minnesota State), who is 0-0 with a 2.84 ERA on the year in one start and one relief appearance. He most recently pitched on June 9th against La Crosse and allowed one earned run on six hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked six. His other appearance on the year came on June 5th, when he came in on relief and allowed one earned run on two hits in 1.1 innings.
Walloping Weeks
Over the last two games, Weeks has catapulted himself towards the top of multiple categories in the Northwoods League. He has gone 6-for-9 with two doubles, a triple and seven RBIs over the last two games and is now hitting .347, which is sixth in the league. He entered last night’s game tied for 26th in the league in RBIs, but now sits at third with 16 on the year.
Rallying for Runs
After the Mallards scored 14 runs last night, they are now third in the Northwoods League South Division—and fourth overall—in runs scored with 90. Only the Wisconsin Woodchucks and the La Crosse Loggers have more in the South Division, as they each have plated 92. The St. Cloud Rox lead all Northwoods League teams with 104.
The Mallards will activate infielder John LaPrise (Virginia) prior to tonight’s game. The 6’3,” 175-pound native of Exton, Pennsylvania just recently finished his freshman season with the Cavaliers.
