Battle Creek, MI — June 17, 2013. The Madison Mallards (10-7) hope to begin a new winning streak Monday night against the Battle Creek Bombers (10-8) in the teams’ first matchup of the season. First pitch is schedule for 6:05 pm.

The Mallards had a three-game winning streak snapped Sunday against the Green Bay Bullfrogs, as Bullfrogs second baseman Bryant Burleson (Texas Tech) hit a three-run home run off of Mallards reliever Hunter May (UNC-Charlotte) in the top of the tenth to give the Bullfrogs a 7-4 win.

That wasn’t the only damage Burleson did either, as he hit a solo home run off of Mallards reliever Kristian Calibuso (Eastern Michigan) in the sixth.

The Mallards were led by Tate Matheny (Missouri State), who hit a three-run home run in the fifth. It was his fifth of the season. Catcher Mike Fitzgerald (Indiana State) got the Mallards on the board early by singling in right fielder Drew Weeks (North Florida) in the second.

Greg Welsh (Penn State) will be looking to improve to 3-0 on the year for the Mallards. He received a no-decision in his last start on June 10th against the Lakeshore Chinooks, but won his two other starts. He has pitched at least five innings in each start and has not allowed more than five hits in any of them. He holds an ERA of 1.76 in 15.1 innings of work on the season.

Hunter Devall (LSU) will be making his fourth start of the season and will also be looking for his first win. He has not received a decision in any of his starts. He most recently pitched on June 8th against the Wisconsin Woodchucks and allowed two runs on four hits in four innings. He has an ERA of just 1.54 in 11.2 innings of work so far on the season.

Matheny the Monster

Matheny’s three home runs over the past four games have lifted him into a tie for first place in the Northwoods League for most home runs. His total of five on the season is tied with Green Bay’s Tripp Martin (Samford), Mankato’s Chase Simpson (Wichita State) and Alexandria’s Tim Cusick (Dakota Wesleyan).
