Green Bay, WI — June 19, 2013. The Madison Mallards (12-7) can close out a perfect, three-game road trip with a win against the Green Bay Bullfrogs (8-13) Wednesday at Joannes Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
The Mallards swept the Battle Creek Bombers away from home Monday and Tuesday. Starting pitcher Luke Staub (George Washington) was the story of the night on Tuesday, as the 6’2,” 200-pound native of Peoria, Illinois went 7.2 innings and allowed no earned runs on just five hits. He walked just one and struck out three and improved to 1-2 on the year. He has an ERA of just 0.96 on the season.
The Mallards scored a run in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to pull out a 3-1 win. Drew Weeks (North Florida) extended his hitting streak to nine games by hitting an RBI ground-rule double in the sixth, John LaPrise (Virginia) hit a two-out RBI single in the seventh and designated hitter Mike Fitzgerald (Indiana State) homered in the eighth. It was his second straight game with a round-tripper.
Cody Peterson (Madison College) will get the nod tonight and will look for his first win of the season. His last appearance came on June 13th against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters, where he allowed one run (earned) on four hits in four innings. He also made an appearance at Eau Claire on June 9th by pitching a scoreless sixth inning while allowed one hit and one walk.
Matt Esparza (Tennessee) will be dueling Peterson and will also be looking for his first win of the season, as the 6’2,” 180-pound native of Redondo Beach, California has received a no decision in each of his three starts. His most recent outing came on June 13th against the Eau Claire Express. He went 5.1 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on just two hits while walking three and striking out three. He has an ERA of 4.39 on the year.
Looking for 10
Outfielder Drew Weeks will be looking for a hit in his tenth straight game Wednesday night against the Bullfrogs. The 6’2,” 180-pound native of Green Cove Springs, Florida has multiple hits in five of those games—including a 4-for-5 game at Green Bay on June 14th—and has knocked in 15 runs. His average now sits at .333, which is tied for 14th in the Northwoods League.
Lofty LaPrise
LaPrise has made the most out of his three games since joining the Mallards on Sunday afternoon. The 6’3,” 175-pound native of Exton, Pennsylvania is 5-for-11 and came up with a huge, two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh last night against the Bombers.
