Mequon, Wisconsin. June 22, 2013. The Madison Mallards (13-9) hope to even their critical three-game series with the Northwoods League South Division leaders Lakeshore Chinooks (16-8) tonight at Kapco Park.
The Mallards sit in third place and are two games back of the Chinooks after an 11-3 defeat in a rain-shortened game at the ‘Duck Pond’ Friday night. The Mallards were down 4-3 heading into the eighth, but the Chinooks rallied to send 11 batters to the plate in the inning and scored seven runs.
Danny Sullivan (Davenport) relieved Mallards starter Jamie Nunn in the fifth inning and faced the minimum in his first three innings of work. He then allowed four straight hits to start the top of the eighth and was replaced by Nick Smith (Western Illinois). The inning was highlighted by right fielder John Norwood’s (Vanderbilt) grand slam to left field.
Tate Matheny (Missouri State) hit an RBI single in the second to get the Mallards on the board. Their other two runs came in the fifth off of a Drew Weeks (North Florida) home run and a John LaPrise (Virginia) run that came off of a Chinooks error.
Right-hander Jordan Tabakman (UConn) will be starting tonight for the Mallards and looks to improve to 2-0. He last pitched on June 16th against the Green Bay Bullfrogs and didn’t receive a decision. He last 4.2 innings and allowed three runs (all earned) on four hits. His win came on June 9th against Eau Claire, when he allowed no runs on just two hits in five innings. He has an ERA of 2.79 on the season.
The Chinooks will be countering with 6’4,” 225-pound righty Joe Greenfield (Eastern Illinois). He has rebounded from a rough first outing in which he allowed five earned runs on eight hits in just 3.2 innings against Wisconsin Rapids by allowing one earned run or less in his other two starts. He got the win in his last start on June 14th against the Battle Creek Bombers by allowing just one run on three hits in six innings.
Another Three-Bagger
Matheny and third baseman John LaPrise (Virginia) both hit triples last night against the Lakeshore Chinooks and have raised the team’s total to 10 on the season. Their total of 10 triples is double what any other Northwoods League team has on the season.
