Madison, WI — June 28, 2013. Madison Mallards (18-10) pitchers Greg Welsh (Penn State), Danny Sullivan (Davenport) and Hunter May (UNC-Charlotte) combined to one-hit the Wisconsin Woodchucks (10-19) in a 2-0 victory Friday night and helped moved the Mallards into first place in the Northwoods League South Division standings.
The La Crosse Loggers beat the Lakeshore Chinooks 4-3 and now sit at 19-11, which is 0.010 percentage points behind the Mallards.
Welsh carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning but had Woodchucks leadoff hitter and center fielder Joey Rodriguez (Wake Forest) break up the no-hit bid with a single up the middle. Welsh went seven innings and allowed just one hit while striking out seven and walking two. He threw 92 pitches on the night and improves to 4-0.

The Woodchucks led off the ninth by reaching on an error by Mallards shortstop Mike Reuvekamp (California) and advanced to third on a wild pitch while there was one out in the frame. Rodgriguez then hit a chopper back to May and caught the runner in a rundown to preserve the shutout. May struck out second baseman Brandon Krieg (Purdue) to end the game to give the Mallards their first shutout of the season.
The Mallards scored both of their runs in the fourth inning off of Woodchucks reliever Austin Orewiler (Rice). Reuvekamp knocked in second baseman Erik Forgione (Washington) on a groundout to second and third baseman John LaPrise (Virginia) knocked home designated hitter Geonte Jackson (San Jacinto CC) with a single up the middle one batter later.
Woodchucks starter Koby Gauna (Cal State Fullerton) went three innings and allowed no runs on four hits while walking one. Orewiler was saddled with the loss and drops to 0-5. He pitched four innings and allowed two runs on four hits.
