Wausau, WI — July 21, 2013. Madison Mallards (13-7, 34-19) pitchers Reilly Hovis (North Carolina) and Danny Sullivan (Davenport) combined to hold the Wisconsin Woodchucks (11-8, 24-29) to just one run in a 7-1 victory Sunday night in both team’s last game before the All-Star break.
Hovis threw six shutout innings of three-hit ball in his second-consecutive outing while striking out six. He only walked a pair.
The Woodchucks didn’t have a runner reach third base until the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Stieb (San Joaquin Delta) singled and reached second on an error by Mallards right fielder Drew Weeks (North Florida) and came around to score two batters later when Jake Jefferies (Cal State Fullerton) singled him in.
Sullivan recorded his third save of the season by pitching the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. He allowed one unearned run on four hits and struck out five.
Meanwhile, the Mallards put runs on the board consistently by scoring one run in the second, third, fourth, seventh and ninth innings while plating two in the sixth.
The Mallards also took advantage of three Woodchucks errors, as the runs they scored in the third and fourth were unearned and one of the two they scored in the sixth was also unearned.
Mallards leadoff hitter Mike Reuvekamp (California) did his job at the plate, as the third baseman reached base four times without putting the ball in play. He was walked three times and was hit by his 20th pitch of the season while scoring one run in the game.
Drew Weeks (North Florida) snapped a five-game streak in which he did not record an RBI by going 2-for-5 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Designated hitter Mike Fitzgerald (Indiana State) and shortstop Erik Forgione (Washington) also had solid nights at the plate by each recording two hits and an RBI.
Stieb, the Woodchucks leadoff hitter, was the only batter in the lineup with multiple hits. He finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Mallards will return home on Thursday, July 25th after the All-Star Break for a 7:05 pm game against the Battle Creek Bombers. The ZOOperstars will be providing in-game entertainment. Christmas in July will feature Waylan St. and the Magic Elves and a Santa Maynard Bobblehead Giveaway.
