Madison, Wis. – The Madison Mallards have announced the signing of junior right-handed pitcher Tim Black from Central Michigan University and junior left-handed pitcher Tom Constand from the University of Western Illinois.
Black, a 6’3”, 230-pound righty from Mount Hope, Ontario will join the Mallards after completing his first season with the Chippewas. He spent his freshman and sophomore years at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC). He currently has a 2.13 ERA in 25.1 innings pitched over nine appearances. He is 2-1 with 24 strikeouts and seven saves in his first season in Division I.
In 2013, Black went 6-3 with a 1.88 ERA with 76 strikeouts, and just 24 walks in 72 innings pitched at NIACC. He was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II World Series all-tournament team after he posted a World Series record 16 strikeouts in a 2-0 win over Madison College. He finished his career at NIACC as the schools career leader in strikeouts (132) and ERA (1.88).
Constand, a 6’2”, 190-pound southpaw from Rochester Hills, Michigan will debut for the Mallards after wrapping up his third season with the Leathernecks.
So far, in 2014, Constand is 2-7 with a 5.73 ERA. He has made ten starts and appeared in 17 games. He has 41 strikeouts in 59.2 innings pitched. As a junior in 2013, Constand led the team in starts (14) and wins (4). He finished 4-5 with a 3.32 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 78.2 innings pitched. He struggled as a freshman in limited playing time, sporting an 8.59 ERA in 7.1 innings pitched.
He starred at Notre Dame Prep High School where he was named All Catholic three years (2009-2011), and All-County and All-Conference two years (2010-2011). His senior season, he finished with a 1.01 ERA and 110 strikeouts. He finished with four varsity letters in baseball and was named a captain twice. He is majoring in Physics at Western Illinois.
