Wisconsin Rapids, WI – July 9, 2014. The Madison Mallards (6-3, 24-18) took down the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (3-4, 15-27) tonight by a score of 8-4 to even their six game home and home series at 1-1.
Left fielder Alex Bacon (North Florida) went deep in the second inning, hitting a two run bomb to put the Mallards up 2-0 and added a triple in the ninth, scoring on an error later in the inning to finish 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
The Rafters would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the second after Bacon’s home run, and added one run in each the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
The Mallards scored three runs in the fourth, helped by designated hitter Pete Alonso’s (Florida) RBI single, his 27th of the year, to drive in second baseman Robbie Tenerowicz (California) and bring the score to 5-2. Alonso finished 2-for-4 with two singles.
Right fielder Connor Marabell (Jacksonville) added a run in the eighth inning, doubling to score Tenerowicz, who reached on a single and stole second during Marabell’s at bat. The Mallards would go on to score two runs in the ninth, bringing their lead to 8-4.
Closer Tim Black (Central Michigan) shut down the Rafters in the eighth and ninth innings, giving up one run on two hits while striking out four.
Mallards starter Christian Taugner (Brown) went five innings, striking out eight while allowing one run on four hits.
The Mallards teed off on Rafters starter Jeff Gogue (Cal. State- Dominguez Hills), scoring five runs on seven hits against the lefty. He walked four while striking out three in the loss.
The Mallards stay in Wisconsin Rapids tomorrow to wrap up their five game road trip against the Rafters at 7:05 pm before returning to the “Duck Pond” on July 11th to begin a three game home series against the Rafters at 7:05 pm.
