Madison, Wis. (June 19) – The Madison Mallards have announced the signing and addition of catcher Jason Goldstein (Illinois) to their 2015 active roster. Goldstein will contribute to the Mallards on a full-time contract for the remainder of the season.
A 6-foot-0 backstop originally from Highland Park, Ill., Goldstein joins the Mallards following a junior collegiate campaign in which he batted .286 with eight home runs and 47 runs batted in across 206 at-bats for the Fighting Illini.
Goldstein was named to the Big Ten’s All-Freshman team after compiling a .231 batting average over 43 games in 2013. His sophomore 2014 collegiate year concluded with a .316 average and inclusion into the Big Ten’s All-Second Team.
No stranger to the Northwoods League, Goldstein posted a .301 average, .789 OPS and 16 runs batted in with the Mallards two summers ago. His 1.21 walk-to-strikeout ratio was one of the best marks of any Madison hitter that year.
Goldstein’s impressive work at the plate – and behind it – caught the attention of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who drafted him in the seventeenth round of Major League Baseball’s 2015 first-year amateur draft earlier this month.
