Madison, Wis. (August 2) – Sterling Sharp (Drury University) tossed five hit-less frames with seven strikeouts on the hill, Cameron Frost (Washington State) clubbed his second home run since July 27 with three runs batted in and Tyler Frohwirth (Minnesota State) provided a perfect ninth as the Madison Mallards (18-11, 38-26) defeated the Wisconsin Woodchucks (10-19, 22-42) 8-2 on Sunday in Wausau. Madison’s third consecutive Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison ‘Big Win’ of the Night completed a perfect weekend for the Mallards, who still hold second place in the South Division’s second-half standings.
Field manager Donnie Scott and his coaching staff witnessed their lineup grab the contest’s first lead in the top of the top half of the second, one made possible by Collin Theroux’s (San Joaquin Delta CC) run-producing groundout to bring home Frost from third base. Sharp, tabbing his first start of the 2015 season on the mound for Madison, meanwhile proceeded to whiff seven hitters – four of them swinging – and allow no base hits with just one walk across five strong innings for the Mallards staff, putting himself in position to receive a winning decision with a 1-0 Madison lead after five.
Just two games removed from plating a season-high 19 runs Friday night at Joannes Stadium, the Mallards hot-swinging lineup padded its lead over the Woodchucks in the top of the sixth thanks to Frost’s three-run blast to score himself, Jason Goldstein (Illinois) and Jean Ramirez (Illinois State). Wisconsin trimmed Madison’s lead to 4-2 after touching home twice between the sixth and seventh, but a four-run top of the ninth that included a 2 RBI single from Matt McCann (Fairleigh Dickson) ran Madison’s lead to 8-2. Frohwirth then sealed Madison’s win with a perfect ninth against Wausau.
With their third consecutive victory in the books and a one-game lead in the division’s second half and overall standings exiting Sunday, Scott and the Mallards will make their way back to the Duck Pond on Monday, August 3 for the opener of a two-game home set with the Alexandria Blue Anchors to begin the final week of the regular season. Monday will be Circus World night at Warner Park, featuring live circus entertainment before, during and after the 7:05 p.m. game.
