Madison, Wis. – The Madison Mallards (1-2) are set to take on the Lakeshore Chinooks (2-1) Friday night at Warner Park for the final game of a two game set. After a Chinooks win last night, the Mallards look to spark their offense and split the series.
For the Mallards, defense was the bright spot in last night’s game as corner outfielders Jett Manning (Alabama) and Tyler Williams (Arizona State) both made spectacular plays. Manning’s diving catch in right field with the bases loaded allowed the Mallards to get out of a jam unscathed. Williams made a leaping catch as he crashed into the wall in left field, robbing the Chinooks of extra bases. The Mallards position players seem to be settling in at the Duck Pond.
Tonight’s Mallards starter is scheduled to be Mitch Vogrin, a right-hander from Illinois State University. Vogrin established himself as an impact reliever for the Mallards last summer. He made 20 appearances and posted a 2.57 ERA with Madison last year as the Mallards go-to-man out of the bullpen. Vogrin tallied 36 strikeouts while only walking seven. Vogrin’s start tonight will be his second as a Mallard. In his lone start last season, Vogrin worked 4.0 innings and only allowed three hits.
Scheduled to face Vogrin is Lakeshore starter Aaron Patton. Patton, a 6’6” righty, just finished his junior year at St. Louis University. This spring, he pitched in 21 games for the Billikens, starting five. He posted a 6-2 record and a 5.40 ERA while holding opposing batters to a .253 batting average.
Tonight’s game features Dentistry for Madison: Dr. Jay Hazen Chris Farley bobblehead giveaway with a Chris Farley best dressed costume and impersonation contest. It is also Wisconsin Lottery Night. Gates are scheduled to open at 5:30 PM at Warner Park while first pitch is at 7:05 PM.
