Madison, Wis. – After falling in a low-scoring affair last night, the Madison Mallards (3-6) are set to take on the Rockford Rivets (5-4) again tonight at Warner Park. Last night, strong pitching was the story for both teams as Rockford starter Anthony Dahl only needed one run of support to hold off the Mallards. Dahl worked eight scoreless innings and tallied 13 strikeouts. Mallards starter Matt Horkey (UNC-Charlotte) threw well too as he went 5.2 innings, allowing just one run. Matt McCarty (Louisville), who came in for Horkey, worked 3.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen and gave up just a single hit.
Tonight, the Mallards will look to awaken their bats as the offense could only muster five hits last night. Centerfielder Doran Turchin (Illinois) will be a key part of sparking the Madison bats as he owns a .406 average and has knocked in a team-high of 14 runs. Turchin is scheduled to be slotted in the three-hole again tonight. Right fielder Jeffery Mitchell Jr. (California) will also be an important part of the Madison offense as he’s scheduled to bat clean-up. Mitchell has a .286 average through 21 at bats. He has a home run and two RBI.
Scheduled to start on the mound for the Mallards tonight is Mitch Vogrin. Vogrin, a junior from Illinois State, has made one start this season for the Mallards and lasted 3.0 innings against the Lakeshore Chinooks, giving up five hits and striking out four. Vogrin will look to bounce back with a strong outing on Thursday evening to follow Horkey’s solid start last night.
Set to oppose Vogrin is Rockford starter Jeffery Barton. Barton has made one start for the Rivets this season, earning a win over the Wisconsin Woodchucks. He tossed five innings, striking out four and allowing two earned runs.
First pitch is set for 6:35 this evening at Warner Park. The game will feature Chris Clark, a professional stunt rider, presented by Schwinn. Gates are scheduled to open at 5:00 PM.
