Madison, Wis. – The Madison Mallards (5-6) crushed their way to another high-scoring victory as they beat the Wisconsin Woodchucks (4-7) 11-3 on Friday night at Warner Park. Doran Turchin (Illinois) had another phenomenal game at the plate as he hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs.
Mallards starter Luke Matheny (Oklahoma State) earned his second win this season as he tossed six innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, and striking out four. Luke’s batterymate was his brother Jake (Indiana), who arrived to Madison earlier this afternoon. The brothers were on the same page, attacking Woodchuck hitters all evening.
The Mallards carried the momentum from last night into the early innings of tonight’s ballgame as they tallied seven runs in the first two frames. Madison scored three in the first inning, all coming on the first of Turchin’s two home runs. They would tally four more in the second, a pair coming on an RBI single by Brock Weimer (SIUE).
“The last couple games I’ve been seeing the ball well, I’ve just been hitting the ball hard right at guys,” Turchin explained. “But that’s baseball for you. Tonight things worked out,” he said with a laugh.
Turchin’s second dinger led off the bottom of the fourth and gave Madison an 8-2 lead. Shortstop Cole Daily (Notre Dame) also had a strong evening at the plate as he tallied three hits, scored three runs, and knocked in a pair. Daily doubled in the fifth and later scored on a Jeffery Mitchell Jr. (California) base knock. After five, the Mallards led 10-3.
With the Woodchucks threatening in the top of the seventh, Mallards left fielder Jalen Harrison (Virginia) made an inning-ending snag against the left field wall on a deep fly ball to rob the Woodchucks of multiple runs. Reliever Sam Cottingham-Beard (Western Illinois) was able to work a pair of scoreless innings as he struck out two and allowed just one hit.
Madison hosts the Wisconsin Woodchucks again tomorrow night with first pitch set for 6:35 PM. The game will feature Star Wars Night presented by Dentistry for Madison: Dr. Jay Hazen. The Mallards will wear Yoda themed jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game to benefit DAIS. The game will be followed by post-game fireworks presented by Hy-Vee. Tomorrow morning, the Mallards will host a Zimbrick Honda FREE Kids Clinic from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Warner Park.
