Madison, Wis. – The South Division used a crucial four-run eighth inning to top the North Division 6-2 in the 2017 Northwoods League All-Star game in Wausau on Tuesday night. All three Mallards participants saw action and Cole Daily (Notre Dame) and Doran Turchin (Illinois) both made a large impact for the South.
Daily, the Mallards shortstop, played the entirety of the ballgame for the South side. He scored a pair of runs and delivered a key single to knock in the go-ahead run. Daily led off the bottom of the first with a walk and swiped second base a few batters later. He ended up scoring on a single for the game’s first run. In the crucial eighth inning, with the game knotted at two, Daily singled to score Matthew Mika to give the South team the lead.
Turchin followed in the eighth with a single that sent Daily home to extend the South advantage to 4-2. Turchin played the entire game in centerfield and tallied a pair of hits in four at bats. The three knocks from the Mallards duo were the most combined hits from any single NWL team. The pair of RBI from Daily and Turchin allowed the South to pull away and roll to a 6-2 win.
Mallards hurler Simon Rosenblum-Larson (Harvard) tossed the second inning for the South squad. Rosenblum-Larson allowed three hits and one run but limited the damage by stranding a runner on second.
