The Madison Mallards (16-17, 35-33) were taken down by the Green Bay Bullfrogs (11-20, 22-44) on Wednesday night at Warner Park. The Mallards offense was held silent by Green Bay starter Matt Goyita and fell 6-1. The Madison bullpen was a bright spot in the defeat as they worked 6.2 innings of scoreless ball.
After the Bullfrogs jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, David Stover (Marrieta) entered in the third inning and worked 2.2 scoreless innings and allowed only two hits. To follow Stover, Sam Cottingham-Beard (Western Illinois) and Alex Marro (South Dakota State) both worked two innings and held the Bullfrogs scoreless. At one point, the combination of Stover and Cottingham-Beard retired 14 straight Green Bay batters.
Despite the Mallards bullpen shutting down the Bullfrogs, the Madison offense couldn’t string hits together to formulate a comeback. The Mallards left a total of 11 runners on base and only scrapped across five hits in the ballgame. Green Bay starter Matt Goyita was stellar all night as he worked 7.2 innings and allowed just the one run while battling through many tough at bats with Madison batters.
The Mallards were able to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh after Maverick Handley (Stanford) and Cole Daily (Notre Dame) started the inning with hits. Handley ended up scoring when Goyita balked to send the Mallards catcher in from third, giving the Mallards their only run of the game.
The Mallards head to Wausau tomorrow to take on the Wisconsin Woodchucks. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. The Mallards will return to Warner Park on Saturday night to face the Battle Creek Bombers. The game is scheduled to start at 6:35 PM and gates will open at 5:00 PM. The game features the SweetRight Brothers presented by Madison Gas and Electric.
