The Madison Mallards (11-3) tied their longest winning streak in franchise history, hanging on in the ninth inning, to defeat the Kingfish 5-3 Monday night at Simmons Field. The victory gave the Mallards their ninth win in a row and fourth straight series sweep.
Starting pitcher Dalton Wiggins (Marietta) spun six scoreless innings to earn the victory, and has not allowed an earned run in 19 innings this year. Leon Hunter (North Carolina A&T) pitched two scoreless innings, and Nick Morales (San Jose State) stranded two men on base to end the game.
Turning Point
The game was a scoreless pitching duel through five innings. The Mallards loaded the bases in the sixth with a lead-off single by Garrett Kueber (Austin Peay), and walks to Hunter Hisky (Southwest Baptist) and Jake Randa (Northwest Florida State). David Vinsky (Northwood) stepped to the plate and unloaded the bases with a rocket down the left field line for a grand slam and a 4-0 lead. The Kingfish scored three in the bottom of the ninth, but Morales sawed off the bat of a Kingfish hitter to secure the win on a bloop grounder back to the mound.
