Madison, Wis. – Former Madison Mallards Pete Alonso cranked a two-run home run in the 2018 Futures Game at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. last night. His two-run shot towered over the leftfield fence, traveling 415 feet and exiting his bat at 113 miles per hour. The home run gave the US team a 9-6 lead in the seventh inning before the squad went on to win 10-6.
Alonso was included in the 2018 Futures Game after showing impressive potential during his time in the Mets organization. The first baseman started at AA this spring and hit 15 home runs in 65 games before being moved to AAA last month. Since the promotion, Alonso has six bombs and 23 RBI. Alonso was selected in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Mets and hit 18 home runs and knocked in 63 runs while accumulating a .289 average last season in AA.
Alonso played for the Mallards in 2014 and had a spectacular summer. Alonso was named the NWL Most Valuable Player after hitting 18 home runs, knocking in 53 runs and finishing with a .354 batting average. Alonso played in 59 games for the Mallards and finished with 80 hits and held a .419 on base percentage.
Alonso returned to the University of Florida for his sophomore year after his summer in Madison. As a sophomore in 2015, Alonso hit .301 through 39 games and totaled five home runs and 32 RBI and ended up earning a spot on the 2015 SEC All-Tournament Team. Alonso had an even better junior season as he played in 58 games and hit .374 with 14 bombs, 18 doubles and 60 RBI. His batting average ranked third in the SEC and his .659 slugging percentage led the conference and Alonso was named First Team All-American.
The Mallards are not in action today but will be back at Warner Park for two games tomorrow. The first game will be the continuation of the postponed game from Friday, July 13 and will start at 4:00 PM. Game two will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one and will be seven innings. The games feature Group Health Cooperative Fitness night with a Goat Yoga ticket special.
