Last night, the Madison Mallards (14-5) split a two game series with the Wisconsin Woodchucks after blowing a three-run lead in the top of the fifth and a two-run lead in the top of the seventh inning. Despite the defeat, every single player in the starting lineup reached base safely at least one time.
Even with the loss the Mallards remain on top in the Great Lakes West division.
This afternoon the Mallards are competing against their second cross-state rival, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (10-8). The Rafters are currently in second place, three and a half games behind the Mallards in the Great Lakes West division.
Today’s matchup marks the third time the two teams have met this season. The first time ended in a Mallards sweep, but a Rafters sweep in their next meeting evened the record at 2-2.
Starting on the mound for the Mallards is RHP Lowell Schipper (Richmond). The matchup against the Rafters marks Schippers fourth start of the season. He currently holds a 2-1 record with triumphs over the Lakeshore Chinooks (6-13) and Kokomo Jackrabbits (10-9). His last start was against the Rafters on June 9. He currently holds a 2.40 ERA, has accumulated 13 strikeouts and only eight walks over 15 innings pitched.
