The Madison Mallards (24-11) fell 7-6 to the Lakeshore Chinooks in walk-off fashion on Monday at Kapco Park. With the bases loaded the bottom of the ninth inning, David Dunn (Northwestern) blooped a walk-off single to right field to plate the game-winning run.
The Mallards once again grabbed a lead in the first inning. Justice Bigbie (Western Carolina) kept his hot streak going offensively with an RBI single to drive home the first run of the night. Two batters later, Andre Nnebe (Santa Clara) put the Mallards ahead 2-0 with a single of his own, notching his 10th RBI of the summer.
The Chinooks scored their first run of the game in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Justin Olson (Kentucky) and slimmed the Mallard lead to 2-1.
The Mallards tacked on four runs in the eighth to reach a 6-1 lead. Drew Williams (San Jose State) laced an RBI single to drive home the first run of the frame. Then, Wade Stauss (SEMO) picked up his ninth RBI of the summer with a sacrifice fly. Then, pinch-hitter Logan Michaels ripped a two-RBI double to open it up to a 6-1 lead.
Lakeshore responded with four runs of their own in the eighth inning to once again make it a one-run game. Nathan Aide (Madison College) launched a two-run home run to make it a 6-3 Mallard advantage. A few pitches later, Griffin Doersching (Northern Kentucky) knocked a solo home run to left. Olson tallied his second RBI of the game with a single later in the frame to make it a 6-5 game.
In the ninth, Lakeshore scored their first run of the inning on a throwing error by the Mallards to tie the game 6-6. Then, with the bases loaded, Dunn dropped the game-winning hit into right field to seal the 7-6 victory.
Ryan Schmidt (Butler) was the final arm for Lakeshore before the walk-off and earned the win in relief. Tanner Bradley (Rend-Lake) donned the loss for the Mallards after allowing three runs in his outing.
Turning Point
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Chinooks blasted back-to-back home runs and reclaimed the momentum from the Mallards. After the home runs, Lakeshore slimmed its deficit to one run before ultimately picking up the win in the ninth.
Top Mallards
- Bigbie turned in another multi-hit night at the plate, finishing 2-for-5 with an RBI. Bigbie’s RBI total is now at 37 for the summer
- Quinn Gudaitis (Illinois Wesleyan) turned in another quality start for the Mallards. The right-hander tossed six strong innings and allowed just one run while not walking any batters. It was the first time this summer Gudaitis did not earn a decision on the bump.
- Michaels drilled his ninth double of the season in his only at-bat, collecting his 16th and 17th RBI of the season
