Last night the Madison Mallards (31-15) picked up their 31 win of the season, after defeating the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders (19-27) 6-5. Madison’s offense rallied in the top of the ninth to grab a one-run lead, after losing the lead for the first time during the sixth inning. Stellar pitching from the bullpen shut down the Dock Spiders lineup and allowed Madison to pull off the victory.
Tonight, the Mallards return to the Duck Pond to open a series against cross-state rivals, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (29-17). The two teams last met during the first half of the season in mid June for a two-game series. Each team picked up a victory for the split, making the record between the two teams, 3-3.
Overall, the Rafters sit in second place in the Great Lakes West division, two games behind the first place Mallards. Since the second half of the season began, both the Mallards and Rafters have earned a 6-4 record and are tied for second place. Both teams trail one game behind the first place Green Bay Booyah (22-24).
Back on the mound for his eighth start of the summer is RHP Quinn Gudaitis (Illinois-Wesleyan). Through his eight appearances, he has thrown through 35.2 innings, punched 30 strikeouts and allowed only 18 walks. He holds a 4.03 ERA and currently leads the Mallards pitching staff in the most wins with five.
