Following a tight 6-5 loss against the Wisconsin Woodchucks on Saturday which ended a three-game winning streak, the Madison Mallards (14-18) welcome in the Kenosha Kingfish (19-13) for a two-game set.
Last night the Mallards came back from a 5-0 deficit thanks in part to a game-tying two-run home run from Drake Baldwin (Missouri State). Baldwin is 7-for-7 with two walks in his last two games at the plate and will be in the cleanup spot in the lineup tonight.
The Woodchucks scored in the top of the ninth and then the Mallards fell just short in the bottom of the inning, putting runners at second and third with nobody out and failing to score.
Tonight, the Mallards will send left-hander Andrew Neu (UW-Milwaukee) to the mound to start. Neu has made five starts this season and owns a 4.15 ERA in 26 total innings pitched. He pitched in Kenosha back on June 9th and threw six shutout innings in a victory.
On the mound for the Kingfish will be left-hander Dante Guarascio (Carthage College). Guarascio is 1-1 on the season with a 2.7 ERA in his five starts. He pitched against Madison on June 8th and got the win, allowing just one run in five innings.
The Kingfish come into today’s game tied for first place in the Great Lakes East division with Traverse City. The next two games will be the final two of the first half season, with the second half starting on Tuesday, so a playoff spot is on the line for Kenosha.
The Mallards come into the day in fifth place in the Great Lakes West division after splitting once again with the Woodchucks, who are in second place. The Mallards are seven games back of Fond Du Lac, who sits atop the standings.
The Mallards welcomed their largest crowd of the season yesterday with 5,506 attending Saturday’s game. There will once again be fireworks following today’s game which is scheduled to start at 5:05 p.m. The series with the Kingfish will conclude tomorrow with an early first pitch at 1:05 p.m.
