Coming off a tough 7-6 loss at home against the Fond Du Lac Dock Spiders, the Madison Mallards headed to Fond Du Lac for round 2 against the Dock Spiders
The Dock Spiders struck first in the bottom of the 1st, scoring 2 runs off RBI single from Jackson Loftin and a sacrifice fly from Ryan Lasko.
The Mallards answered back in the top of the 3rd inning when JT Benson (Louisville) drove in a run through a HBP and Josh Caron (Nebraska) delivered a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 2-2.
After the Dock Spiders tacked on a few runs to take the lead, Bryan Shellenbarger (Akron) came up big with a 2 RBI double that tied the game at 5-5. Later in the 5th inning, Zach Smith (Hartford) added an RBI single to give the Mallards a 6-5 lead.
Josh Caron (Nebraska) delivered a 2-run home run in the top of the 6th and Zach Smith (Hartford Community College) tacked on some insurance with an RBI double to put the Mallards up 9-6.
The Dock Spiders battled back in the bottom of the 6th to make it a 9-9 ballgame.
In the top of the 8th inning, Tyler Dean (St. Edwards) drove in Bryant Shellenbarger (Akron) with a Sacrifice Fly to take a 10-9 lead.
Zach Smith (Hartford Community College) shined at the plate, going 3-5 with 3 RBIs.
The Mallards hung on for the win, 11-9, and improved their record to 16-12. They are now 3 games out of 1st place.
The Mallards will return to Madison for a 2-game series against the division leading Wisconsin Woodchucks. They will play again Saturday, August 7th at 6:35 PM.
