Mequon, WI – The Madison Mallards took down the Lakeshore Chinooks 7-5 in the first meeting of the season between the Great Lakes West division foes.
The Mallards got on the board early in Mequon when Blake Guerin (Iowa) belted a 2-run home run in the first inning. It was the first home run of the season for Guerin, and the third home run overall for the Mallards this season.
Lakeshore grabbed a 5-4 lead in the 4th inning, but the Mallards chipped away at the lead and got sharp pitching from the back end of their bullpen.
Caleb Karll (Ohio) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 5th to tie the game up at five, and the Mallards tacked on a run apiece in the 7th and 8th innings to go in front.
Jake Schaffner (North Dakota State) reached base four times in the win for Madison.
The Chinooks threatened in the bottom of the 8th inning, as the first two hitters of the inning walked. However, Mallards catcher Will Vierling (Louisville) threw out Gabe Roessler (Wisconsin-Milwaukee) trying to steal third base, then Sam Hunt (Minnesota) lined into a double play to end the frame.
The Madison bullpen did not allow a run in the final five innings of the game. Jase Schueller (Vanguard) pitched a scoreless 9th to nail down his first save of the season. Luke Agnew (Wichita State) recorded the win for Madison, while Alex Redman (Wisconsin-La Crosse) picked up the loss for Lakeshore. The Mallards improve to 3-2 on the season in the win, while the Chinooks fall to 3-2.
