Battle Creek, MI – June 18, 2013.  Luke Staub (George Washington) was spectacular all night for the Madison Mallards (12-7) as he held the Battle Creek Bombers (10-10) to one run (unearned) and just five hits in a 3-1 win.  Staub went 7.2 innings, struck out three and allowed one walk while improving to 1-2 on the season.

The Mallards notched single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.  Right fielder Drew Weeks (North Florida) got things going with an RBI ground-rule double that scored third baseman John LaPrise (Virginia) in the sixth.  LaPrise followed up in the seventh inning with a two-out RBI single that knocked in catcher Jason Goldstein (Illinois), who led off the inning with a triple.  Designated hitter Mike Fitzgerald (Indiana State) hit his second solo home run in as many days with two outs in the eighth to round out the Mallards scoring.

The Bombers notched their only run in the third inning when Tommy Mirabelli (Kansas) scored on a Staub error.  It appeared that Staub had picked off Mirabelli in a run-down between second and third but he threw the ball past LaPrise at third, allowing Mirabelli to score.

The Bombers threatened in the eighth inning with a pair of two-out singles against Staub, but Mallards closer Hunter May (UNC-Charlotte) got the final out and pitched a scoreless ninth to record his Northwoods League leading sixth save.

Weeks has now hit safely in nine straight games for the Mallards. During that stretch he is hitting .410 with 15 RBIs and has seven extra-base hits.

The Mallards continue their road trip Wednesday when they head to Green Bay to take on the Bullfrogs.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.

The Mallards return home Thursday, June 20th against the Bullfrogs. Verno’s Custom Tattoo Night will be that night.
