KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Richmond Flying Mummies (8-17, 25-35) have hit the road for four straight games, beginning with two against the Kalamazoo Growlers (9-17, 30-32) following a loss on Wednesday to Battle Creek.
After Richmond used stellar pitching and well-timed hits to take the first game, 7-6, over the Battle Jacks, things turned on their axis in game two, a 12-7 loss. Richmond found themselves in a 5-0 hole by the second inning, and while bringing it as close as 6-4 in the fourth, Battle Creek rattled off six unanswered runs across the next two frames, with the Mummies scoring once in the eighth and twice in the ninth.
The positive trends shown from the mound in game one did not repeat themselves, as Richmond yielded 13 walks between three pitchers, compared to just three the night before using as many arms. Offensively, the Mummies strung together 11 hits. but stranded seven baserunners, also going hitless from the fifth through seventh innings.
Richmond has returned to the bottom of the Great Lakes East, half a game behind the now-tied-for-sixth-place Growlers, who are knotted even with Battle Creek. Rockford and Kenosha both sit five games ahead and tied for third, 1.5 games behind a Traverse City team facing a 1.5 game gap between them and Royal Oak, which extended from 0.5 after a Pit Spitters loss and Leprechauns win on Wednesday
Kalamazoo marks the final Great Lakes East city that the Mummies have yet to park the bus in, having hosted the Growlers for four total games at Historic Don McBride Stadium. While it may have been all Kalamazoo the first two times around, the two most recent saw Richmond explode for 35 runs and 44 hits combined, including a Northwoods League season-high 25 hits in game one.
Hayden Brooks (1-3, 7.62 ERA) is on the mound for the Mummies, his fourth start in five appearances. Kalamazoo’s Liam Golden (2-2, 8.64 ERA), meanwhile, suits up for fifth start and 12th overall appearance. This is his second start against the Mummies, pitching 4 1/3 innings in a 17-10 loss in the second game in Richmond, allowing seven hits and seven runs (six earned) with three walks and eight strikeouts.
