TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — The Richmond Flying Mummies (9-18, 26-37) are in Traverse City for two games against the tied-for-first-place Pit Spitters (18-10, 39-25) after going 1-1 in Kalamazoo.
Game one against the Growlers was another offensive masterclass, a 15-5 victory that saw the Mummies string together 17 hits, with every player recording at least one, and six different players with one or more RBI, five of whom had two. The pitching rotation also held up their end of the bargain, dealing just six walks and holding Kalamazoo scoreless for the first five innings, and seven total.
The second game was the polar opposite, however, a 10-1 loss where Richmond only mustered up two hits the entire game, their lowest total all season. In a severe contrast, among ten team hits, Kalamazoo’s bats erupted to the tune of three home runs: a solo shot in the second, a two-run homer in the fourth, and a three-run blast in the eighth.
With nine games to play, the sixth place Mummies are not out of the playoffs just yet, but at 8.5 games back, it is a long road to the top. The Pit Spitters and Royal Oak Leprechauns carry the same record, 3.5 games in front of the third place Rockford Rivets. The Kenosha Kingfish are a game further behind in fourth, then a 3.5 game drop-off finds Kalamazoo, then Richmond, followed by the last-place Battle Creek Battle Jacks, officially eliminated from playoff contention.
Traverse City are coming off a three-game home sweep of the Kingfish, and are desperately trying to keep pace with Royal Oak as the second half of the season enters its climax. The Mummies last split a pair of games against the Pit Spitters at Historic Don McBride Stadium on July 24th and 25th, a 7-5 victory and 5-0 loss, respectively. Richmond has won three of the ten total matchups this season; however, none on the road.
Jaden Alberson (1-2, 13.50 ERA) is up for his fifth start and sixth appearance overall for the Flying Mummies. The Pit Spitters are relying on one of their newest arms, as Carson Anthes (0-0, 9.00 ERA) makes his second start in as many appearances.
