Diaz

Former Border Cats shortstop Jonathan Diaz played his first game with the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night and he played a big role in the Jays 4-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.  Diaz collected his first major league hit and drove in his first run with an RBI single in the 4th inning off Tampa's Alex Cobb to put Toronto ahead 4-0.

Diaz, who will turn 29 on April 10th, played on the 2005 Border Cats NWL Championship team.  He became the second Border Cats player to reach the big leagues when he played in five games for the World Champion Boston Red Sox last year.  Matt Mangini, who also was a member of Thunder Bay's 2005 team, played for the Seattle Mariners in 2010.

A valuable training ground for coaches, umpires and front office staff, more than 115 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including MLB All-Stars Max Scherzer (DET), Chris Sale (CWS), Jordan Zimmermann (WAS), Curtis Granderson (NYY), Allen Craig (STL) and Ben Zobrist (TB). All league games are viewable live and free of charge via the Northwoods League YouTube channel.
