Thunder Bay, Ont. –Joe Nellis (St. John’s) and Gui Gingras (St. John’s) will both be headed to the Border Cats from St. John’s University this summer.
Joe Nellis previously played at Herkimer College and won eight of the nine games he pitched picking up a 2.37 ERA with one complete game, allowing only 35 hits over 38 innings. Nellis aided the Generals in winning the Region III Championship and placed third in the NJCAA Division III World Series. In his first season with the Red Storm he has allowed only 25 runs in 35 innings on the mound.
The Quebec native, Gui Gingras, is in his first year with the Red Storm after playing for Monroe College last year. The infielder had a .372 batting average playing 46 games and picking up 40 runs on 61 hits. He also yielded a .960 fielding percentage for the Mustangs helping the team to their NJCAA Division I Region XV Championship.
The Border Cats are a member of the finest developmental league for elite college baseball players, the Northwoods League. Playing its 3rd season of summer collegiate baseball in 2016, the Northwoods League is the largest organized baseball league in the world with 18 teams, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind. A valuable training ground for coaches, umpires and front office staff, more than 140 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer (WAS) and MLB All-Stars Chris Sale (CWS),Jordan Zimmermann (DET), Curtis Granderson (NYM), Lucas Duda (NYM) and Ben Zobrist (CHC).
