Border Cats Split the First Doubleheader with Honkers
Due to rained out games in Thunder Bay and Rochester earlier this summer, Monday was a doubleheader for both teams. To note, both games were seven innings long with only a small gap in-between games.
In game one, the Thunder Bay Border Cats fell 4-2 thanks to a strong outing from the Honkers starting pitcher Manny Armendariz. Armendariz pitched a complete game allowing only five Border Cats hits. The game played out with the Honkers getting on the board first and then holding a 4-0 lead for a long time until the Cats cut the lead in half in the seventh inning. Gabe Lozada hit a two run home run to cut the lead in half but the Cats couldn’t get anything else across home plate.
In game two, the Cats got the dominating performance on the mound from starting pitcher Blaze Bohall. In his five innings pitched he struck out seven Honkers and picked up his fifth win of the season as the Cats won 4-0. Offensively, Brendan Dougherty got the Cats off to a quick start with a solo homerun to give the Cats the early 1-0 lead. In the third inning, Noah Strohl doubled the lead with a RBI single to score Andy Weber and give the Cats the 2-0 lead. Finally, in the fifth inning Noah Strohl and JF Garon each added RBI singles to give the Cats the 4-0 lead. From there Bohall and Biondic shut down the Honkers from the mound and gave the Cats the series split.
Most Cats will have the day off tomorrow except for the four members competing at the Northwoods League Major League Dreams Showcase. Nick Ciandro, Jake Mielock, JF Garon, and Andy Weber will all be competing for the Cats in Madison, WI. They will rejoin the rest of the team on Wednesday for another doubleheader versus the Honkers.
