The Border Cats pitching staff continues to dominate in the first week of the Northwoods League season as Thunder Bay blanked the Rochester Honkers 1-0 on Wednesday night at Mayo Field. Cats hurlers have now pitched 26 shutout innings out of 27 to open the campaign as Thunder Bay’s improved its record to 2-1.
The Border Cats scored the only run of the game in the 1st inning after the first three batters reached base and Peter Fusek (Western Illinois University) delivered a sacrifice fly scoring lead-off man Lucas Terilli (East Central College). Righthander Petyon Fosher (University of Nevada) picked up the victory as he scattered five hits over 6 1/3 innings with two strikeouts. Reliever Kannon Carr (Jefferson College) notched a hard earned save as he struck out six in the final 2 2/3 innings, including escaping a two-out bases loaded jam in the 8th inning and a two on, two-out situation in the bottom of the 9th inning.
The Cats and Honkers wrap up their two-game set on Thursday at 7:35pm ET. Righthander Matthew Tippie (Texas State University) is the scheduled to take the mound for Thunder Bay. The Border Cats play their home opener Tuesday, June 6, at 6:35pm at Port Arthur Stadium against the Duluth Huskies. The stadium ticket office is open weekdays from 11:00am to 3:00pm.
