The Duluth Huskies scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth inning and escaped with a wild 11-10 win over the Thunder Bay Border Cats on Sunday before 828 fans at Port Arthur Stadium.
The Cats had an early 4-0 lead after two innings, but fell behind 10-7, before rallying for three runs in the bottom of the eighth to knot the game 10-10. Trey Fikes (Three Rivers College) and Greg LaChance (University of Illinois) both had two hits in the defeat, while reliever Shane Kearbey (University of Missouri-St. Louis) was the hard luck losing pitcher.
The Cats first place record in the Great Plains East Division now stands at 10-3 and they remain tied with the Wausau Woodchucks for the best overall record in the Northwoods League.
The Cats and Huskies wrap up their series on Monday with a special start time of 11:05am with the first School Day game of the season. Andrew Hardin (Southwestern University) will take his 2-0 record to the mound for Thunder Bay. The grandstand is sold out; however, fans can purchase tickets on the OPS/Wakefield Oil Change Plus Party Deck or the Salt & Pepper Catering Tiki Bar. Those tickets will be on sale at the stadium box office beginning at 9:00.
