The Thunder Bay Border Cats held the lineup of the Great Plains East Division leaders largely in check, but came up one run short on the road against the Waterloo Bucks.
The Border Cats fell 3-2 to the Waterloo Bucks at Riverfront Stadium on Thursday night, opening up a two-game series against their division foes from Iowa.
Right hander Ethan Froud (Pratt Community College) had a strong start for Thunder Bay, scattering only three hits while striking out a trio of Bucks batters.
Thunder Bay’s Manny Alberto (Three Rivers Community College) went 1-for-2, notching a seventh-inning RBI double that briefly drew his team level before Waterloo recorded the go-ahead run in the bottom half.
Southpaw reliever Owen Thomson (Southeastern Community College) made a scoreless appearance and recorded the final five Waterloo outs without allowing a hit in his season debut for the Border Cats.
The Border Cats close out their two-game series with Waterloo on Friday with Matt Sargeant (North Dakota State University) scheduled to get the start on the mound, followed another pair on the road against the La Crosse Loggers. The Border Cats will return to Port Arthur Stadium on Monday, hosting the Eau Claire Express. First pitch of that game is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
