The Thunder Bay Border Cats collected their fifth straight victory, holding on for an extra innings win over the Rochester Honkers.
A two-run double by Lucas Johnson (Eastern Michigan University) in the top half of the 10th gave the Border Cats enough of a margin to pull out a 5-4 victory over the Honkers at Mayo Field on Sunday to sweep the two-game series between the two sides.
Thunder Bay has now won 11 of their last 14 games.
Starting pitcher Cameron Johnson (Rutgers University) tossed a gem, going six-plus innings and allowing only one run and scattering four hits while striking out five.
Jackson Irwin (Bellarmine University) was credited with the win for his third of the season while Carter Wall (University of Utah) picked up his second save.
The Border Cats now sit at 17-10 in the first half, finding themselves 2.5 games back of the La Crosse Loggers in the hunt for the Great Plains East division first half crown.
The Border Cats continue their road trip with a pair against the Waterloo Bucks starting on Monday. Tyler Talbert (University of Texas-Arlington) is the expected starting pitcher for Thunder Bay. The Border Cats will return to Port Arthur Stadium on June 27 to host the Mankato MoonDogs. That game will be a ‘‘Flyaway Friday’ with one lucky fan winning two tickets for anywhere Porter Airlines flies.
