The Thunder Bay Border Cats waited out a four-hour rain delay on Sunday, but it was worth it in the end, as they got back into the win column with an 8-1 victory over the Mankato MoonDogs at Port Arthur Stadium. The Cats scored twice in the third inning and put the game away with a four-run seventh inning to split the two-game weekend series. Cole Ketzner (South Alabama) and Zane Skansi (Creighton University) both had two hits and knocked in a pair of runs, while Trey Lewis (South Alabama) and Daylan Pena (Texas State University) also collected two hits as the Cats ended a seven-game losing skid.
Karson Shepherd (Texas A&M University-Kingsville) got the start on the mound for Thunder Bay and pitched four scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out five. Cole Poirrier (Nicholls State University) picked up the win in relief as gave up one run over three innings with two strikeouts.
Following a stretch of 32 games in 30 days, the Border Cats get a much-needed day off Monday, before continuing their four-game homestand on Tuesday at 6:35pm against the Minnesota Mud Puppies in the opener of a two-game set. It’s “Bark In The Park Night” with the first 150 dogs through the gates receiving a free bag of treats courtesy of Pet Valu.
