The Thunder Bay Border Cats completed a weekend home sweep of Duluth and won their third straight game over the Huskies with a 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon in front of 986 fans at Port Arthur Stadium. The Cats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat and evened the season series with the Huskies for the Superior Cup at five games apiece.
Carter Allen (Eastern Illinois University) knocked in two runs for the Cats, giving him five RBI in two games, as he had a run scoring single in the first inning and a sacrifice fly in the third. Cole Ketzner (University of South Alabama) had an RBI double in the opening inning and his college teammate Tyler Kehoe (University of South Alabama) delivered an RBI groundout as the Cats upped their overall record to 26-32.
Cole Poirrier (Nicholls State University) got the win to improve to 2-1 in his second start of the season. The righthander pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and two runs with three strikeouts. Barron Sawyer (Nicholls State University) got four outs in relief with a pair of strikeouts and Michael Pirrello (University of California-Irvine) pitched out of two on, none out jam in the ninth inning, getting a game ending double play ground ball for his first save.
Following the three-day All-Star break, the Border Cats open their final homestand of the season, consisting of six games, on Thursday when they take on the Minnesota Mud Puppies at 6:35pm.
