The Thunder Bay Border Cats finished up their six-game road trip with a 4-2 record after losing 15-8 to the Waterloo Bucks on Thursday night at Riverfront Stadium. The loss dropped the Cats second half record to 7-3 and 25-19 overall.
The Bucks had a 6-4 lead halfway home and put the game away with a six-run fifth inning to earn a split of the four-game series. Sam Stem (Gonzaga University) had a night to remember at the plate for the Cats as he had the rare feat of hitting for the cycle. The left fielder went 4-for-4, with three runs scored, to raise his batting average to .324. Stem singled in the second inning, doubled in the fourth, tripled in the sixth, and completed the cycle in order with a two-run home run in the top of the eighth. Thomas Cooper (Valparaiso University) and Trey Fikes (Three Rivers College) both collected two hits as Thunder Bay wound up with 13 hits in the game, while Waterloo totalled 14. Dylan Mulcahy (Stephen F. Austin State University) started for the Cats and took the loss to even his record at 1-1. The righthander allowed eight runs (seven earned), on seven hits over four innings, with four walks and three strikeouts.
The Cats return home Friday to open a six-game homestand with the opener of a four-game series against the La Crosse Loggers. First pitch is set for 6:35pm at Port Arthur Stadium. It’s also “Fly Away Friday” as fans will have a chance to win a trip for two anywhere Porter Airlines flies. The stadium ticket office opens on game days at 10:00am.
