The Thunder Bay Border Cats ran their winning streak to four games on Sunday afternoon as they outlasted the Rochester Honkers 2-1 in 10 innings before a sun splashed crowd of 715 at Port Arthur Stadium. The Cats have climbed back to the .500 mark at 7-7 and have recorded three walk-off wins at home this season.
With Owen Ralph (Lindenwood University) the automatic runner at second base to start the bottom of the tenth inning, Jorge Valdes (Xavier University) advanced him to third with a sacrifice bunt. That set the table for Logan Groh (University of Nebraska), who lined a single to centre field to plate Ralph with the winning run.
Sunday was an absolute pitchers duel as Thunder Bay starter Tyler Bribiescas (University of Arkansas-Monticello) didn’t allow a hit until there were two outs in the sixth inning when the Honkers scratched out an infield hit. The lefthander went six shutout innings, allowing just the one hit, with no walks, and eight strikeouts.
Rochester starter Maclain Roberts (University of Arizona) was equally as strong as the southpaw fired six no-hit innings with two walks and seven strikeouts. Catcher Hayden Crites (McLennan CC) ended the Honkers no-hit bid with a single to centre field with nobody out and a runner on in the seventh. The Cats managed just three hits on the afternoon, but still pulled out the win, to up their home record to 6-2. Reliever Lucas Mercado (Ouachita Baptist University) tossed two scoreless innings, fanning a pair of Honkers hitters, to earn his first victory of the season.
The Border Cats will enjoy Monday off before hitting the road Tuesday for the start of two-game series in Wausau against the Woodchucks at 7:35pm ET. Lefthander Vincent Segovia (University of Arkansas-Monticello) is scheduled to make his first start of the season. The Cats return home Thursday for the opener of a two-game set against the St. Cloud Rox at 6:35pm.
